Clare’s fingers blurred over the wincing keyboard. She was the fastest claim processor in the department with no intention of slowing down. Interns trembled in her wake, IT configured a private network so that nothing would impede her workflow, her hands never stopped shaking. She was so efficient that it was cheaper for the company to provide a new keyboard every week (she tended to shatter the Enter and Tab keys) than get her to relax.
When people asked why she tried so hard, Clare wouldn’t respond. After 32 years she couldn’t remember if there ever had been a reason.
